bishop thomas grant rc secondary school

In summer 2014 Bishop Thomas Grant School in Lambeth took part in Translation Nation with six of their French classes in Years 8 & 9 participating in a subtitling workshop. Working with bi-lingual storyteller and translator Emily-Jane, the classes learnt about the many jobs that language speakers can access and specifically about the roles of translators and interpreters. The classes were introduced to the concept of subtitling and considered how subtitles need to reflect the language and culture of the audience as well as of the film. Using a glossary and working in groups they translated a transcript from a short film clip and then used their imaginations and problem solving skills to move from translating word for word to a version which made sense and captured the spirit of the dialogue in the film.
