At Chestnut Grove Academy in Wandsworth students took part in a Translation Nation workshop in summer 2014. Students were surprised to be watching film clips in French, and were interested to see that in the French school depicted students didn’t wear school uniform. The subtitling task divided the classes, with half feeling that it was an easy challenge as they were able to use familiar language in English to reflect the teenage characters speaking in the film, and the other half feeling that it was tricky as they had to think hard to try to find English equivalents for French expressions and it took time and brain power! In response to a final the final feedback question “What has this workshop got you thinking about?” students responses included “About passing my French GCSE!” and “Future jobs – what you can do with languages”.
