Year 5 at Sheringham Primary School in Newham took part in Translation Nation in summer 2014. With two Year 5 classes in the year group, the school was keen for both classes to be able to make the most of this exciting opportunity and one class worked with the Translation Nation team and in the other class the activities were mirrored by their class teacher who had already attended a project INSET afternoon. To open the project both classes listened to a magical story in Spanish, and cleverly used the picture prompts to work out what it was about! Facilitator Shazea said “I was amazed how much the children understood!”. As the project progressed, stories in many languages were shared including in Bengali, French, Urdu, Arabic and Portuguese. Working in groups pupils concentrated on their writing and literacy to produce adapted versions in English. In both classes the children were keen to perform their work, and got down to some impressive prop making to make sure their stories would captivate their audience. It was a little nerve-racking performing the stories, but all the groups did really well and their teacher said she was very proud of what the pupils had achieved.
